Rushing, Eroding, Growing

Rushing, Eroding, Growing

Geology at work: a tale of three speeds in the evolution of the landscape. In the distance, the Bruar Water flows fast; in the mid-distance, the natural arch just below the Lower Bridge at the Falls of Bruar, where the river has eroded softer rock leaving an outcrop of harder material; in the foreground, a heather (calluna vulgaris) plant growing bright and pink/purple/lilac-coloured, using eroded limestone for fertilizer.
