2021-06-05 Noctiucent Clouds Display 7

Display image: 2021-06-05 Noctiucent Clouds Display 7
Noctilucent (bnight-shiningb) clouds are the highest in the atmosphere, at around 75-86km altitude. They only appear in the summer months at latitudes between 50-70B0 (north or sourh), when the sun is more than 6B0 below the horizon. Formed in the mesosphere at very cold temperatures from ice, dust and water vapour, their gossamer threads undulate and shimmer in shades of electric blue. I spent a happy hour out in a nearby field watching the display come and go, the tendrils of cloud expanding and moving in complex abstract patterns.
