A System of Boundaries and Borders
With the introduction of enclosure came the segregation of large areas of land for one or a small number of designated purposes. On a social scale it brings gross inequality: under 1% of the population "own" half the area of the country. The story does not end there. With movement limited by boundaries, fences and roads, some wildlife species no longer have the ability to roam; with resource availability (including both predator/prey food-chain relationships and the tendency of wildlife to carry plant seed around) limited to islands, accordingly the variety of species in each area necessarily reduces along a downward spiral as well. The ostensibly humble fence-post is a marker for a root of all kinds of environmental influence.
