Perseus Molecular Cloud
The Perseus molecular cloud (Per MCld) is a giant molecular cloud located approximately 1000 light-years away in the constellation of Perseus. It comprises gas and dust weighing over 10,000 solar masses in an area of sky 6 by 2 degrees.
The gas-cloud is nearly invisible except for two clusters, IC 348 and NGC 1333, where low-mass stars are formed.
However, the cloud is highly luminous in mid- and far-infrared wavelengths and submillimeter radiation due to dust heated by newly formed low-mass stars.
Perseus has been identified as a source of anomalous "spinning dust" emission at microwave frequencies by the COSMOSOMAS.
