The Top of the Triangle

The Top of the Triangle
Been up there... Clouds swirling around the top of Schiehallion, taken from across Loch Rannoch.

In 1774 the mountain was used in the famous Maskelyne/Mason experiment, using the regular shape of the mountain and density to estimate its mass, from which the deflection of a pendulum nearby allowed calculation of Newton's gravitational constant, G. In the process, Charles Hutton assisted by modelling the shape of the mountain by height, a system that came to be known as contour lines.
