For several years, whilst travelling north up the A9 passing Slochd, I've noticed this bit of old tarmac - obviously the former A9 road running near-parallel.

Its history goes considerably further back: there was a route along the line of this tarmac dating back to the 1840s-1880s, quite probably a former drove road; the Highland railway line adjacent to the west was only constructed in the 1880s onwards.

Nowadays it's used as a cycle track but it still forms a lovely sweeping arc through the autumn orange and green trees.
